About

Lycos Research was created as a binding department between Lycos and the scientific world. Its core mission is to contribute to the development of the next-generation internet (Web 3.0). Web 3.0 content has an additional dimension which makes it easier for machines and algorithms to capture its meaning and thus, among other things, to enhance significantly the process of search. A possible way towards this is the combination between Web 2.0 community-based approaches and semantic technologies that automatically interpret human-understandable content.

The Lycos Research team brings its internet applications and search technologies know-how into the research and development of application-oriented technologies and enhanced technical standards under the form of cooperations within German and European-wide projects.

The focus of the Lycos Research portfolio is the development of solutions in the areas of:

  • semantic web and ontologies
  • data mining
  • automatic tag generation
  • machine learning
  • social search

Currently, Lycos Research is involved in the project Alexandria, an end-user-orientated application scenario within the THESEUS project. In the beginning of 2008 Lycos Research also started collaborating within the EU project WeKnowIt. Additionally, Lycos Research is involved in various small-scale projects in the academic field.
